SEO consultant in Sydney, measured on new customers
A report full of clicks can still mean nobody new found you. As an SEO consultant in Sydney, working in SEO since 2018, I plan SEO around the searches people make before they know your name, and judge it on what those searches bring in.

What an SEO consultant actually does
An SEO consultant works out what's worth doing and in what order. That means reading your Search Console data, seeing which searches bring in customers, and deciding where the next dollar goes. It's closer to running a plan than ticking off a checklist.
My work covers technical SEO, content structure, schema and entity markup, and internal linking. I've been doing it since 2018, across agencies big and small, and these days I publish what we find in pooled Australian data so the thinking is out in the open.
Consultant or agency: you don't have to pick
People usually weigh this up because a consultant gives you direct thinking and an agency gives you capacity. A solo consultant can run out of hands, and a big agency can pass you to someone you've never met.
I work inside Uppercut Digital, so strategy comes from someone who reads your data, and a team handles the content, links and paid media when the plan calls for them. If you want a one-person freelancer who does everything personally, I'm not that, and that's worth knowing before we talk.
What searching in Sydney changes
Sydney is a set of very different markets. When we searched "plumber" from six points across the city, the 18 map pack positions went to 17 different businesses. A plan built on one suburb's results can be wrong for the next one over.
Business type matters too. On mobile at position 1, local-service businesses in our data earned 4.0% of impressions as clicks, against 9.7% for national sites. So a clinic or tradie in Sydney needs a different forecast from an online store, even at the same ranking.
Who it's a good fit for
It's usually a good fit if:
- Search already brings you customers, but you can't tell what's working
- You've paid for SEO and can't see what it did
- You're planning a website rebuild that could damage what you have
- You want the reasoning explained, with the data behind it
It's usually not the right move if:
- You need leads this month, when paid search tends to be faster
- Your site has so little on it that there's nothing to improve yet
- You want one freelancer doing every task personally
Why rankings alone mislead
Position 1 for non-brand searches earned 7.17% of impressions as clicks across 99 Australian sites, nowhere near the 27.6% most forecasts borrow from a 2019 US study. So a plan built on the old figure promises traffic that won't arrive. We split brand from non-brand first, then forecast from Australian numbers.
What we work on
- Non-brand and brand reporting, split from day one
- Keyword plans sized on measured Australian click-through rates
- Service and category pages built to answer the buying question
- Internal links pointing at the pages that earn money
- Earned links, with anchors that read naturally
- Monthly reporting tied to enquiries and sales
How it runs
- MeasureSeparate brand from non-brand and find what you already rank for just off page one.
- PrioritiseRank the work by likely return, using Australian click-through data instead of borrowed averages.
- BuildFix the pages closest to earning, then add the ones missing from your market.
- ReportShow what new customers did, not only what rankings moved.

Common questions
What does an SEO consultant do?
An SEO consultant works out which searches can bring you customers, what's stopping you winning them, and what to fix first. That covers technical issues, pages, links and reporting.
Is SEO dead now with AI?
No. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve from its Search index, so being findable in search still feeds those answers. What's changed is how many clicks a ranking earns: position 1 got 7.17% for non-brand searches in our Australian data, so forecasts and reporting need updating.
How long does SEO take to work?
Fixes to pages already ranking can show within weeks. New pages in a competitive market usually take months. We'd rather give you a range based on your own data than a promise.
How do I know it's working?
Watch non-brand clicks and the enquiries or sales they bring. Total clicks can rise purely because more people searched your name.
How much does an SEO consultant cost in Sydney?
Most Australian small and mid-sized businesses pay $1,500 to $3,500 a month before GST for ongoing SEO, based on the published guides we compared. That's the market range, not a quote. Our full cost breakdown shows where the money goes.
Do you work with businesses outside Sydney?
Yes. I'm based in Sydney and Uppercut Digital works with businesses across Australia. Most of the work runs on data and video calls, so location matters less than knowing your market.
Will I work with you directly?
I lead on strategy, and specialists at Uppercut handle much of the delivery. If you have a preference, tell me when you get in touch.
Do you guarantee rankings?
No. Nobody controls Google's results, so any guarantee is a warning sign. We commit to the plan, the reporting and being straight about what's working.
